The government behaved wisely, and asked its ambassador in Rome, Pellegrino Rossi, to persuade Gregory XVI that it was better to withdraw the Jesuits by his command than to suffer them dissolved by the State. That Gregory agreed to such a painful demand is one more sign that he could act more flexibly than was expected from his reputation. The division was at its worst in education. Some members of the teaching profession were free-thinking or agnostic. Catholic newspapers -were ferocious in their attacks upon the way in which teachers tried to make their children non-Christian.

He was exiled as a political radical after the Revolution of 1848 and spent twelve years in England. His movement had little depth or devotional power. What was unusual was the place of women, for in the organization of congregations and synods women had an equal place with men. They concentrated on social welfare and organizations for charity and education. Bit by bit the people fell away, either into Protestantism or into free-thinking. For three years it was important, but in the longer run it was not a weighty protest within Catholicism.

But the troubled soul was not dead. Three months later, on 30 April 1834, there appeared in Paris Paroles d'un Croyant (Words of a Believer). It had no author's name. It quickly sold many copies. When Archbishop Quelen of Paris contrasted it with his undertaking to write no more on religious matters, Lamennais replied that he wrote it a year before and that the book was not about religion but about politics. It was later clear that in earlier editions he left out paragraphs which said hostile things about Gregory XVI.
